Polster, Lieder, Woodruff & Lucchesi actively recruits lawyers with outstanding academic records and superior writing skills. The firm looks for individuals with a high degree of maturity, independent motivation, and excellent interpersonal skills. Polster, Lieder seeks lawyers with engineering or science degrees who have passed the patent bar or are qualified to sit for the patent bar.

Polster Lieder offers a stimulating work environment where attorneys reach their potential through a combination of the collaborative experience and training the firm provides, as well as through their own hard work and commitment to the practice. Mentoring is a critical part of training. Polster Lieder assigns a partner to serve as mentor for each new associate.

Our 2:1 partner to associate ratio provides a creative work environment that encourages and recognizes talented lawyers, and allows for early client contact and well-rounded career growth. Our lawyers’ experience responsibility early on and can expect to handle complex legal matters in all of our practice areas.

At Polster Lieder, our Associates are expected to bill only 1,700 hours annually. We believe these to be practical goals, and in fact, the Firm does not view high billable hour requirements to be in the best interest of the Associates or the Firm and does not want to induce any attorney of the Firm to bill voluminous hours. By maintaining this goal, the Firm is able to preserve its sociable, informal and open door atmosphere. This approach also allows all of our attorneys to devote their attention to the practice of law.

Summer Associate Program

We believe that your summer experience should provide you with a realistic view of what it is like to practice law at Polster Lieder. Assignments for summer associates relate to ongoing client matters, offer practical exposure to the firm's client base and practice and are representative of work given to attorneys at Polster Lieder. Our partners ensure that summer associates receive a variety of assignments and explore different areas of the firm’s practice. In addition, summer associates often attend depositions, negotiations, hearings, client interviews, conferences and trials.

Outstanding second year students may apply for summer clerkships. We look primarily for academic achievement as well as for activities such as Law Review and Moot Court. We only hire clerks with engineering degrees in the sciences. Clerks and associates are selected solely based on merit, without regard to sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, medical condition, marital status, handicap or veteran status. Compensation meets prevailing rates in the St. Louis, Missouri area.

Lateral Opportunities

At Polster Lieder, we value the skill, confidence, and professionalism of experienced attorneys. Several of our current attorneys have joined our firm after first practicing in other firms. These attorneys soon fit into the sociable, informal and open door atmosphere where they can devote their attention to the practice of law without the stress of large hourly billable requirements. As one of the oldest and largest intellectual property firms in the St. Louis area, Polster Lieder possesses the resources and prestige necessary to ensure the continued growth of your practice.
